An Iowa Wedding: The Bachelorette Party

July 10, 2012

The bachelorette party was a day-long adventure that started out with cake and cocktails at the Barefoot Bar, then progressed to a day of meandering down the lakes in a pontoon boat stuffed full of twenty-something ladies, bottles of booze, and various “gifts” that will not be shown in pictures on this blog due to their lascivious nature.  But they were responsible ladies, and had the foresight to pay the boat rental place to supply them with a driver for the boat.

Meet Tyler.

Tyler is 19 years old.  He was also the lucky employee of the boat rental place who got chosen to drive our boat.  He was pretty happy with this outcome.

This picture is where we returned to the boat rental place and he had to "show off" his good luck to all his male co-workers.  Thinly disguised as having one of them take a group photo.

During the boat float we did the usual: jump on giant trampolines in the water until the homeowners came out and shooed us off, stop at Arnold's Park for a quick roller-coaster ride, dance while wearing stick-on mustaches (yes, that's what Tyler's wearing in the first photo), and attempt to learn how to get back in the boat without a working ladder.  After the boating was more bars, and outdoor concert, and a surprise appearance from a pirate (okay, he was actually a Captain Morgan sales guy, but he did give out free hats to everyone at the bar).

All in all, a successful party to celebrate the impending end of A-Star's single days.

My co-workers like to drink a lot so the local bars are doing well

May 26, 2011

A while back I wrote a post about our local watering hole.  If you haven't read it you might want to pop over on this link and take a look at the photos: Dive Bars and Beers.

I work for a construction company that travels from job to job.  One of the advantages is that when we're constructing a project in a particular area, it brings an influx of money and spending to the local businesses.

Bars, especially, stand to benefit.  I know it's a stereotype, but it's true: construction workers like to drink.

Our local dive bar is one such place.  But the good news is, they're taking the extra profits and putting it back into the business.  I hadn't been there in a while, and was shocked when I saw the newly remodeled ladies bathroom.  The hole behind the toilet is gone, and so is the shower curtain that separated the stall from the outside patio.  Also, the sink is no longer propped up by a 2 x 4.

It's got a new floor and new paint and new vents and everything.

Part 3: Dinner and an (improv) show

February 19, 2011

Maybe you remember that last year we forgot to make reservations until February 13.  And the year before that we didn’t have reservations and ended up with a three hour wait at Claim Jumper in which I was so hungry by the time we got our food I ended up with a migraine, so this year I was determined to make Valentine’s Day reservations early.

I booked us a romantic dinner cruise.  Basically, we get dressed up fancy and eat aboard a cruise ship while it does hot laps around the harbor for three hours.

If you’re not one for Valentine’s Day mushy stuff, I will admit that it’s pretty nauseating.  All these couples playing lovey-dovey and scooting their chairs so they’re sitting on the same side of the table right next to each other and there’s some Barry Manilow playing in the background and rose petals on your table and they greet you with a glass of sparkling champagne when you board.

As you can see, there's even pink napkins and chocolates and candles and such.

One thing we didn’t know when we booked is that the champagne is unlimited.  This turned out to be more of a bonus than we had ever imagined.  And not because we were the ones drinking it.

Our server was very pleasant, but a bit new.  Chris and I chose a bottle of white wine to share.  I told the waiter its name, and he had to look at the menu to figure out which one we had ordered (and it was not some fancy French name, it was a pretty simple American vineyard).  He takes the menu and he’s looking, and he’s looking, and it’s getting a bit awkward because my god, man, you only have 4 options for white wine on the menu how hard can it be to pick out one of four?!

The cruise was just supposed to be dinner and dancing while the lights of the harbor dazzled you from the windows, but it turns out we got an extra bonus:

Seated somewhat near us was a younger couple.  Early on in the night, Chris nudged me.

“See that couple?  They’ve really been knocking back the champagne.  I guarantee they are going to be completely wasted by the end of the night.”

And thus, the show began.  The rest of our night revolved around the Drunk Couple.  And making fun of the Drunk Couple.

So, after about an hour it because obvious that Chris was right and this couple was definitely on their way to being completely smashed.  The woman’s voice became gradually louder and louder, and her hand motions more and more animated.

Then they must have gotten into a fight, because the next thing we know the guy is completely turned away from her, staring out the window at nothing.  And she has her head resting drunkenly in her hands while she is texting her friends on her cell phone.

Chris and I decide to head to the dance floor to dance to a slow song and the next thing we know, Drunk Couple is on the dance floor, making out.  I guess they made up.

After a nice romantic dance, Chris and I return to our seats.  About two songs later, the Drunk Couple returns.

Only they don’t remember where their table is.

They try a couple empty tables before they realize which one is theirs.  Then the girl spies an unopened bottle of champagne on the table that they sat down at (before realizing it wasn’t their table).  She looks around to see if anyone is paying attention and grabs the bottle off the table.  “SHHHHHH” she says, quite loudly, as she giggles drunkenly.

After a couple attempts, her date manages to coordinate himself just enough to make it into his chair.  They are seated for about 0.2 seconds before she wants to get up and go dancing again.

He doesn’t want to dance.  He wants to leave.  He stands up and puts on his jacket.

Chris looks at me.  “Where does he think he’s going to go?  Jump off the boat and swim back to the harbor?”

Drunk Girl looks up at Drunk Guy.

“You are not leaving!” she screeches.  “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!”

“Fine, then I’m going to the pisser.” He says.

He disappears for what seems like a really long time.  While he’s gone, she opens up the champagne bottle.  The “pop” sounds really loud in the room, and she looks over at the sweet older couple sitting at the table next to theirs.  “Would you like some?” she offers.  “We’ve had plenty, really.”

They try to defer gracefully but before anyone can blink she’s up out of her seat and chatting their ear off, completely spoiling their tender romantic moment.  Finally her date comes back and the two of them walk back to their table.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!” she slurs at him for like the fifth time.  “Now sit your ass down and then drink this champagne and then we’re going to dance to a romantic song.”

He sits but starts staring out the window again.  She pours him a glass of champagne.  She forces him into a toast but after a half a sip she is ready to go dance.  He wants to sit and stare out the window.

“Fine,” she says, “I’m going to dance by myself.”  She makes a beeline for the dance floor.  He gets up and starts to stumble after her.

“Whore!” he yells after her.

I look at Chris.  Chris looks at me.  “Did he just call her a whore?”

“Yes,” Chris says, “I believe he did.”

Right then Drunk Guy realizes that he was standing in front of the older couple’s table as he was yelling obscenities at his date.  He glances at them and offers a sheepish, “sorry.”

So he heads to the dance floor and we can only assume they are dancing.

That is, until right in the middle of some sappy romantic song, we hear a commotion on the dance floor and see a flash of someone falling down.  And in case there was any doubt, we hear Drunk Girl’s voice wail, “I fell!” and then start giggling.

Chris looks at me.  “This was the best Valentine’s Day ever, honey.  I’m glad we could take this moment to reflect on our love for each other.  And make fun of other people.  But mostly I enjoyed making fun of the Drunk Couple.”

Finally, the cruise came to an end.  Chris and I gathered up our things and got ready to head off the ship and to our car.  But not, of course, before I opened my purse and deftly scooted all the chocolate candies right off our table and into my bag.  I may not have had room to eat them just then, but I certainly could save them for later.

Valentine’s Day, PART 2

February 18, 2011

The one that all the food servers will appreciate.

Part 3 of this story, “Dinner and an improv show,” is really the best part.  I will give you a little bit of foreshadowing when I say that our dinner cruise involved unlimited champagne and some people have no self-censorship when it comes to free booze.

So based on some free-champagne antics of our dining neighbors, one of the waitresses told us this story.

“You know, people do crazy things.  This one time I had a couple, and I kept noticing throughout the night that their wine glasses were always full.  I thought, ‘that’s a little weird, but they must be getting their drinks at the bar.’  However, every single time I approached their table, the glasses were full.  And I saw them drinking out of them.

Well, finally I noticed that they had brought in several bottles of wine and hidden them under the table.  They were pouring themselves wine from under the table when they didn’t think I was looking.

So, I decided to play a little trick on them.

I went and found the biggest, meanest-looking bouncer that we had (he’s actually a big sweetheart).  And I had him approach their table and tell them that we caught them on security camera (we don’t have cameras).  And he told them that if they didn’t pay the corkage fee, we would call the coast guard and have them arrested.  A group of us were hiding in the kitchen and watching this exchange through the window.  You should’ve seen their faces.  It was fantastic.

And they paid the corkage fee.

Dive Bars and Beers

August 29, 2010

5 SIGNS THAT YOUR NEW FAVORITE DRINKING ESTABLISHMENT IS A DIVE BAR:

#5:  A pitcher of beer only costs $7.00

#4: There is a giant gaping hole behind the toilet (not to mention those curtains)

#3: The fancy artwork is screwed into the wall with half a handful of screws they don't even try to hide

#2: The pool table doubles as a beer pong table

And, finally...

#1: the sink is propped up with a 2x4

Maybe you ask what could possibly entice one to frequent this establishment?  Proximity to the house, that's what.

Gah.  I just looked at the floor below that sink in the picture one more time.

A Housewarming Party, by the numbers

March 30, 2010

22:  People at the party
2:    People who got lost on the way because google maps doesn't know where we live
3:    People it took to figure out our new coffeepot
5:    People who locked themselves in our bathroom due to the faulty door
2:    People who called us from inside the bathroom to come let them out
4:    Number of adult beverages spilled on the floor
4:    Number of times we were glad we chose tile instead of carpet
12:  Bottles of wine we got as housewarming gifts
1:    People who accidentally fell into the pool
8:    High dollar steaks that almost got burned (but didn't)
5:    People sleeping on our couch at the end of the night
3:    People sleeping on the floor
0:    Number of things destroyed or broken during the party

Now that is what I call a successful housewarming party.

Vegas, Baby

March 10, 2010

So, is it inappropriate for your husband to dress up as an Elvis impersonator to attend a Vegas wedding?? Or funny??

We had some good friends get married at the MGM in Las Vegas last weekend.  After a few cocktails at the bar on the night before the wedding, my husband and his twin brother thought it might be hilarious to rent Elvis costumes to attend the wedding.  The next morning, however, we had our doubts.  What seemed like a good idea at midnight on a Friday does not always wash in the light of day.  Plus, it is - ahem - the bride's day.  Two Elvis's might have stolen the show.

Aside from a beautiful wedding, here's a short list of highlights:

Flying into Vegas, and having the air traffic controllers route your plane almost directly over the strip...
strip3

Spending an hour at the North Las Vegas airport hanging out with a woman who I'm pretty sure was the artist Pink...

Visiting the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop and getting a meet-and-greet with Big Hoss and Chumlee...
pawnshop

Spending 15 minutes trying to fish my $5 back from the vending machine (with an earring) when it refused to give me a water....

Only to later have it spit out 3 waters for the price of one (the best payout in Vegas!)...

Checking out the gorgeous view from the bride and groom's private patio...

vegas1

Heading all the way to "Mandolin Bay" to watch the "sharks play their tiny guitars"...

Only to find out the Shark Exhibit costs $25...

And then taking a $6 cab ride back to the MGM because we kept walking in circles around the Excalibur trying to get to the strip...

"Why is it," our friend asked, "that half the doors in these hotels lead to dirty alleyways?"

(We always seemed to find the doors that went out to dirty alleyways, insetad of the glitzy strip)

Oh, and... the best part... coming home with MORE money than you left with...!

Don't forget to do the math

January 10, 2010

"I gotta work out. I keep saying it all the time. I keep saying I gotta start working out. It's been about two months since I've worked out. And I just don't have the time. Which uh..is odd. Because I have the time to go out to dinner. And uh..and watch tv. And get a bone density test. And uh.. try to figure out what my phone number spells in words."   - Ellen DeGeneres
Before the wedding, I worked really hard at the whole eating-right (mostly) thing and the going to the gym (mostly) thing, and I lost ten pounds.  Well, over the past year (after the wedding) I have steadily gained back every single one of those ten pounds, plus one or two extra.  Living with boys sucks at dinnertime, because your 6 oz grilled chicken with salad and ice water does not look nearly as appealing when set next to a plateful of garlic mashed potatoes topped with bacon and cheese and sour cream, a juicy marinated steak smothered in onions and mushrooms, and a roll of warm, crusty white bread with butter, all served with a tall, frosty, full-calorie soda or beer.  And I don't even like steak.

I won't bore you with the details, but just before thanksgiving I decided I needed to kick my butt into gear and go to the gym and start eating more fruits and veggies and a bit less pizza and cookies.  I got myself a trainer and have been fairly successful with my nutritional program, with only a few minor setbacks at Christmastime.  (Oh Fudge and Cookies and Taco Pizza, how I love you so).

Since I sometimes find myself in one of those social situations where drinking beer is both appropriate and expected, and since I do occasionally enjoy a cold beer, I took the plunge and bought myself a 6-pack of MGD 64.  I figured, at 64 calories to Bud Light's 110, I could drink 3 MGD64's for less than the caloric price of 2 BL.  What a deal, right?  My first clue should have been right there in the supermarket display case.  The MGD64 was sitting in the section right next to the non-alcoholic beers.  Hmmm....

But I carried on and decided that if I squirted a little lime juice in it then I could totally pretend it tasted just like a Corona and lime.  Up until I actually compared it with a real Corona and lime, that is.

So of course MGD comes out with this 64-calorie beer, and Budweiser, in the interest of getting their share of the sorority-girl and middle-aged women's beer market, (because the market for early and mid-twenties non-sorority girls will never completely be wrested from the hands of jagermeister) does them one better and comes out with a 55 calorie beer.

Personally, I wasn't really that interested in the 10 extra calories.  I mean, frankly, if you're drinking beer and you're that concerned with ten measly little calories, you probably are better served not drinking beer at all.  But on a whim one evening during the Christmas break, I grabbed a 6-pack.  Everyone else was drinking Bud Light, and I didn't really feel like getting hassled for drinking something in the Miller family.

It was then I made my sad discovery.

Bud Light has 110 calories, and 4.2% alcohol by volume (ABV)
Bud 55 has 55 calories (duh), and 2.4% ABV.

Now the fact that it is stocked right next to the non-alcoholic beers is starting to make sense.  Boo Hiss, Budweiser for fooling us with your little games! (And for the record, MGD64 functions on the same principle... as one enterprising critic put it, "MGD 64 is about 2/3 the calories, and about 2/3 the ABV, and about 2/3 the taste."

*Sigh* it was fun while it lasted, I guess.

Party like a college kid

December 27, 2009

After Christmas was the annual (although a first for Chris and I) Ugly Christmas Sweaters and Edward 40Hands Party. Here is how you play.

1. Find a safe venue with plenty of blankets and pillows so that no one has to drive home after the party.
2. Invite all your friends. Make sure they know that if they participate in the game they will be staying the night.
3. Beg, buy, or borrow an overly-festive sweater.
4. Purchase two 40-oz beers for yourself and any other players with whom you are supplying beverages.
5. Ignore the strange looks from the other people in line when you have to ask the gas station clerk to go in the back cooler for more 40's because you wiped out their selection in the front case.
6. Go to discount store and get duct tape, aspirin, and Gatorade.
7. Head to the party venue, put on your sweater, get out your 40's, and wait for the fun to begin.

Sweaters and 40s

You may notice from this photo that Chloe got to participate as well. She loved her sweater. Chris thought it robbed her of dignity, but I thought it was cute.  And festive.

Chloe 1

See how much she loves it?

Chloe 2

Yep, she just LOVED wearing that sweater.

Chloe 3

About halfway through the night, her sweater mysteriously "disappeared." I did not think she looked any more dignified, though.

Valdigooey

September 04, 2009

When I was in college, I paid for tuition by waiting tables.  One of the restaurants I worked at was a fancy steakhouse.  (This was mildly ironic, since I don't eat steak.)  Anyway, as my Employee of the Month prize - they based this on the number of sales you had in a month - I won a free bottle of red wine.

This wine was the 2002 J. Lohr Vineyards "Wildflower" ValdiguiƩ.

(Oh my god.  I just realized that was SIX YEARS ago.)

So, anyway, six years ago I took that wine to a dinner party at my cousin's house.  I had just graduated college, was in the process of packing up all my belongings to move to L.A., and my tiny car was so full with my stuff that I couldn't see out any of the windows except the front and the driver's side.  Which of course meant it was an excellent time to take a little freeway trip over to San Francisco.  The whole drive I kept waiting for the police to pull me over for having all my windows blacked out with sweaters and cooking pots.

I made it safely, and we all sat around my cousin's kitchen table admiring the wine and wondering what kind it was.  Red, obviously.  But we couldn't figure out what type of red.  It didn't say "Cabernet" or "Merlot" on it, so we were pretty much at a loss.  We drank it anyway... and it was delicious.

After I drove the hour and a half back to Davis, I went asking the Internet Gods for answers.  I had never heard of the ValdiguiĆ© grape before, but now I had my very own special wine that I could bring to the wine parties of all my Napa friends and Viticulture majors and not look nearly as ridiculous as the time I brought the screw-top bottle of Muscat.  (Want to make wine snobs laugh at you?  Bring a cheap bottle of dessert wine to their little party).

The wine is rather difficult to find, your typical grocery store or liquor store won't carry it.  You usually have to go to someplace that specifically sells wines.

Which is why I was jumping for joy at my local Albertson's today.

They not only have my wine, but they have it on sale.  For $8.99.

According to J. Lohr's website, ValdiguiĆ© "is a vibrant, red-purple in color with bright aromas of boysenberry, Bing cherry, raspberry and banana. The fruit complexion on the palate is equally bright, dominated by boysenberry and raspberry." What this means to us humans: it's surprisingly light and fruity-tasting for a red wine.  Think Pinot Noir meets Merlot, with just a bit of sweetness.  Yum.

That old joke about light bulbs

May 04, 2009

Q: How many grown men does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: Apparently, seven, if beer is involved.

It was a relaxing Saturday evening, and we were at a friend's house for a Cinco de Mayo party. The boys were playing their favorite game, "washoes," which is basically a cross between horseshoes and sandbags, only it involves astroturf and giant washers. The sun was setting, and the guys needed more light for their game. They turned on the outside flood lights, but quickly discovered that the crucial game-illuminating light was not working. They all clustered around the defective light with varying looks of concern on their faces, and began throwing out theories as to why it did not work and what could be done to fix it.

"Maybe if you switch it with those lights over there-"
"Before they get too hot to unscrew-"
"Hey, why did all the lights go off-"
"They hit the light switch-"
"Are they on the same circuit-"
"Okay, yeah just swap that one out-"
"It's flickering-"
"I know what you're doing wrong from over here, let me-"
"Okay there, it's on-"
"Now it's off-"
"Yo've got it on again, leave it-"
"But it's not pointed just right-"
"Aw, now it's off again-"
"Okay there it's on-"
"Just keep it there-"
"All right, it's on!"

And thus, after only fifteen minutes and two failed attempts, seven grown men successfully changed a light bulb.
